El Capitan Reflection, Yosemite

Enjoy the blog: Favorite: El Capitan Reflection
A reflection like this requires the confluence of several factors: crystal clear air, perfect stillness (no wind or water motion), the reflective subject in full sun, and the reflective surface in full shade. All of these factors came together on this November morning. Many people ask if this is Mirror Lake (but Mirror Lake actually reflects Half Dome, not El Capitan) and are surprised when I tell them it’s the Merced River. In spring I’d be chest deep in rushing water if I were standing where I stood for this picture; in fall I can (and have) walk across the river at this location. There are reflections like this along the entire length of the Merced River, which might explain why fall just may be my favorite time to photograph in Yosemite.
