I pride myself in my ability to be in the right place at the right time, but sometimes I’m just plain lucky. After wrapping up an Arches and Caynonlands workshop, Don Smith and I detoured into Bryce and Zion on the way back to California. It was complete happenstance that we not only caught Zion at the peak of its fall color, we also found overcast and (occasionally) rainy skies that were ideal for this kind of photography. For someone accustomed to the Sierra’s predominantly yellow fall foliage, Zion’s vivid red maples were a genuine delight.
