The Undiscovered Country

The Undiscovered Country

I’d always dreamed of having a hardcover, coffee-table-worthy book of my images. When others asked, I had to tell them that self-publishing just doesn’t allow me to offer a book with the quality I wanted at a reasonable price. Sigh.

Then, in early 2008, I was contacted by a publisher in Manhattan who had stumbled upon my site while researching the other Gary Hart. He told me my photography was perfect for an inspirational book of nature images and classic poetry, and asked if I’d be interested. After a little amicable negotiation, he dropped the other Gary Hart and we went to work on our project.

Eighteen months and lots of effort later, the “The Undiscovered Country” was released in an exclusive arrangement with Barnes & Noble Bookstores. It’s a hardcover book of photography and poetry that (I’m excited to say) does indeed look great on a coffee table. The photography is all mine; the poetry is (fortunately) not. Among the poets featured are Robert Frost, Emily Dickinson, and Walt Whitman–some of the poems you’ll recognize, some will probably be new to you.

After about a year, Barnes & Noble just about sold out of their 12,000+ copies. Rather than allow the scattered few to languish on the remainder table, I purchased the remaining B&N stock and am selling it directly on my site.

Purchase a signed copy of “The Undiscovered Country” for $20, while supplies last.

  1. Your work is so worthy of being published and it wasn’t luck that made that happen. I discovered to my dismay exactly what you said about self-publishing. It is sooo expensive for what you get. I am looking into “handmade” books now. Congratulations on a well-deserved recognition!

  2. I am Awed by the beauty you capture. I want the book!
Going back to Maui soon, so want it sent there.
